Who We Are
The Saranac Lake Civic Center is a year-round, not-for-profit recreation and events facility serving residents and visitors of Saranac Lake and the surrounding Adirondack community. The Center is less than a mile from downtown Saranac Lake and 15 minutes from Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
Our History
Construction of the Civic Center began in the 1970s, when Saranac Lake residents involved in the Pee Wee Hockey Association worked to cover an existing natural ice rink. A macadam floor was later installed to help address weather challenges. In 1984, the Saranac Lake Ice Center, Inc. leased the space and added plastic matting, refrigeration, and artificial ice. In 1989, the Saranac Lake Civic Center, Inc., a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), took over the arena lease, assumed the remaining debt, and began operating the facility. With support from local municipalities and generous donors, the Center became more sustainable while remaining affordable. During the 1999–2000 season, more than 34,000 user hours were logged on the ice. Today, the Civic Center supports skating and hockey in winter and hosts events that contribute to local community life and the economy in warmer months.
